Based in the heart of Sunderland City Centre, this landmark development is set to become the focus of regional and national software innovation. The Software Centre provides state-of-the-art technology, coupled with stunning, ultra-modern office space, offering the perfect place for entrepreneurs, SMEs and big businesses, looking for a base from which to prosper and grow.

The Brief

Sunderland City Council identified a need for modern office spaces to be made available to the technology sector. As part of their long term commitment to the software industry, it was decided to build the Software Centre in the heart of the city at Tavistock Place, and that the centre should provide a range of audio visual solutions to serve the tenants and third parties.

In 2012, Sunderland City Council signed a new contract with IBM to be the Managed Service Provider (MSP) for the new Centre. Universal AV was approached by IBM for the supply, installation and maintenance of the audio visual equipment as identified by the council.

The aim was to provide a range of formal and informal meeting rooms available for hire by tenants and third parties. This consisted of a conference area to seat up to 160 people, a board room and other meeting rooms to accommodate between eight and sixteen people, plus various "open" and public spaces.

From the start, the process required the input of a range of Universal AV staff, including the Sales, Technical and Installation departments.

The Solution

From the start, the process required the input of a range of Universal AV staff. The solution was designed to provide the Centre with the latest in AV technology. For the Conference Room Universal AV provided 3 x Panasonic PT-DZ770 full HD projectors. These were configured to show any image on any screen from a PC, laptop, Blu-ray or digital signage player, allowing the Centre to display conference information, Twitter feeds, web sites and high definition video.

For the Board Room, Universal AV supplied a Panasonic HD projector. An Extron Retractor system provided delegates with PC and HDMI connectivity from six points around the board room table. An Extron 10" touch screen was provided to control all the presentation equipment.

For the Small Conference Room, Universal AV provided a Panasonic PT-RW330 solid state projector. The projector uses a combined LED/Laser light source, negating the need for expensive lamps. The projector is very environmentally friendly, fitting in with the Council's drive for environmental efficiency and reducing the overall carbon footprint.

All other meeting rooms were equipped with LED screens, Extron local control units and local inputs for PC, Laptop and HDMI.

In addition there are four purpose-built Innovation Rooms equipped with Panasonic Interactive boards and plasma screens and Epson interactive short throw projectors to provide a "scrawl wall" for business meetings, brainstorming and creative thinking.

A cinema room is also available, with a Panasonic PT-DZ770 full HD projector and a 5.1 surround sound audio system. The Public Room contains four wall mounted 50" LED screens and two mobile 50" LED screens to provide a flexible video wall experience to showcase innovative software solutions.

Onelan Digital signage system and Data Capture software was installed to provide a platform for information and promotional services as well as to offer a service to tenants and third parties. An Exterity IPTV system was installed to provide live TV throughout the building via the client's network infrastructure.

The Installation

Universal AV started work in February 2013 and took four weeks to deliver the entire project. The project was managed by a Universal AV Project Manager and was delivered by Universal AV's own team of in-house engineers.

The major challenge to the installation team was to work within the tight time frame in a building that was occupied and open to the public. Great care and consideration had to be taken to ensure that the installation work was carried out in a safe and proper manner and that it did not impact on the daily business of the Centre. Work had to be coordinated with a variety of contractors, to ensure the smooth delivery of the project.

The client now has audio visual facilities unrivalled in the region.
